WhatsApp Automated Replies Will Cost Money From 1 October
From 1 October 2026, Meta will charge for the replies businesses send through the WhatsApp Business Platform, the connection behind chatbots, AI agents and customer-management tools. If you use one, add a payment method before 30 September, or your replies to customers may stop being delivered.
If you only reply by hand in the WhatsApp Business app on your phone, this announcement doesn't change anything for you.
What changed
All of this is from Meta's pricing update:
- Service messages will be charged per message from 1 October 2026. These are normal replies sent in the 24 hours after a customer messages you. They've been free since 1 November 2024.
- Utility messages sent in reply to a customer within that 24-hour window (order or booking confirmations, for example) will also be charged from 1 October. These have been free since 1 July 2025.
- The price is the same as each country's rate for utility and authentication messages.
- No payment method, no replies. Meta says that if a business has no payment method on file by 30 September 2026, it will stop delivering service messages once charging starts.
- Still free: for 72 hours after a customer contacts you from a Click-to-WhatsApp ad or a Facebook Page button, your messages remain free.
Does this affect you?
Yes, if replies to your customers go through a tool connected to WhatsApp: a chatbot, an AI agent, a CRM or a WhatsApp provider. Meta calls this the WhatsApp Business Platform (or "the API").
No change, if you reply yourself in the free WhatsApp Business app. Meta's announcement is about the Platform only.
Not sure which one you have? If anything replies to customers automatically, or someone set up WhatsApp for you through a tool or provider, assume you're on the Platform and ask them:
Are we on the WhatsApp Business Platform? Who pays Meta for our messages, you or us? Is a payment method on file for our WhatsApp Business Account before 30 September?
What to do before 30 September
- Send that message to your developer or WhatsApp provider today. Some providers handle Meta billing for you, and some don't.
- If billing is on your side, add a payment method for your WhatsApp Business Account using the link in Meta's update.
- Check your rate. Open Meta's rate card, choose your market (for example Indonesia) and the Service category. Multiply it by roughly how many replies your tool sends in a month. Your tool's dashboard usually shows this.
- Test it on 1 October. Message your own business number from a personal phone and check that the automated reply arrives.
How to keep the cost down
Meta now charges for each message you send, not per conversation. So:
- Say it in one message, not three. A bot that sends "Hi!", then "Thanks for your message", then the answer costs three times as much as one clear reply. Ask your developer to merge them.
- Cut the filler. "Please wait a moment" messages now cost money too.
- If you run Click-to-WhatsApp ads, replies in the 72 hours after someone taps the ad stay free.
The catch
- The exact October rate for Indonesia isn't stated in Meta's announcement. Check the rate card, and note that Meta says it may update rates up to every quarter.
- Meta's own AI agent (Meta Business Agent) is billed differently, by usage, and has been since 1 August 2026. This post is about regular service replies.
- The free app isn't mentioned. Meta's announcement is written for Platform users only and says nothing about the WhatsApp Business app.
Verdict: if you use WhatsApp automation, act this week. If you only reply by hand in the app, you can ignore this one.
