Do You Still Need a Website If You Have Instagram?
Many small businesses run entirely on Instagram. Customers find you there, message you there and order there. So it's fair to ask: why pay for a website at all?
For some businesses, Instagram really is enough, for now. For others, it quietly loses customers who never find you. Here's how to tell which one you are, with a test you can do in ten minutes.
Instagram is a rented stall, not your shop
Your Instagram account lives on someone else's property. Instagram's Terms of Use let it remove posts and disable accounts that it decides broke the rules. Mistakes happen, and getting an account back can take a long time.
Accounts also get hacked. If that happens, your posts, your followers and your DMs are out of reach until you recover it.
You also don't decide who sees your posts. A post your followers never see might as well not exist. A website is different: the address, the content and the customer list are yours.
People who search Google often never reach your Instagram
Think about how a new customer finds a dentist, a laundry or a caterer. Many type it into Google or Google Maps: "laundry near me", "catering in Bandung".
Instagram posts are hard to find this way. Your prices, hours and menu are buried in old posts and story highlights. A website puts them on one page that Google can show.
Your Google Business Profile, the box that shows up on Maps, has a field for your website. You can add or change it in a few steps. (Google's guide)
When Instagram alone is enough
- You're testing an idea and don't know yet if it will last.
- Most of your sales come from people who already follow you.
- You sell visual products and every order is closed in DMs anyway.
- Customers don't search for what you sell. They discover it while scrolling.
When a simple website pays off
- People search for your type of business in your area.
- You take bookings or orders and answer the same questions all day.
- You sell to companies, hotels or schools that check you out before they buy.
- Some of your customers don't use Instagram, or you sell outside your city.
- Your prices or menu change, and you're tired of reposting them.
The 10-minute test
- Search Google for your business name and city. What shows up first? Is it something you control?
- Search for what you sell plus your area, like "laundry kiloan Bekasi". Do you appear at all?
- Count the DMs from last week that asked about hours, prices or location. A website could have answered every one.
- Imagine your account is gone tomorrow. Could you still reach your regular customers?
If you answered "no" to the last question, start there. Keep a list of your regular customers' WhatsApp numbers outside Instagram, with their permission.
What this means for you
- Keep Instagram. It's still a good place to show your work and talk to customers.
- Add a simple website. One page is enough: what you sell, prices or a menu, hours, a map and a WhatsApp button.
- Put the link in your Instagram bio and Google Business Profile, so each one sends people to the other.
